Cover Song 23: Daddy Cool

After many months without uploading anything to this part of the blog, I will refresh it with a new perspective. As I see there is no point anymore to share some funny video, cause social webs and forums are the main road they travel, I will erase this and I will just comment about cover songs.

Today, there was a sad new, Bobby Farrell, singer of the 70's disco band Boney M. was found dead in a hotel in S. Petersburg (Russia). There was no sign of violence and the cause of death was not determined yet.
2010 will be reminded by the deaths in music of many good artists such as "Boney M." or Pete Steele.

Source

So the post of today will be fully dedicated to Boney M:

Daddy Cool is a song recorded by disco band Boney M. and included on their debut album Take The Heat Off Me. It was a 1976 hit and a staple in disco music and Boney M.'s first UK hit. It reached #6 in the UK charts and #65 in the United States Billboard Hot 100. The single also topped the German charts.

It was the second Boney M. single, released in May 1976 without making any major impact at first. It wasn't until a spectacular performance on the Musikladen TV show in September that the single became a hit, topping most European charts, reaching #6 in the UK and even charting in the US. It proved to be the major European breakthrough of the band.

A curiosity about the song is that the intro was made by producer Frank Farian doing rhythmic 'tic-tic-tic's and playing on his teeth with a pencil.

"Daddy cool" by Boney M. (1976)
Here is the mythical performance in the German TV that pushed the song to be famous:

Daddy cool was covered by many artists, and many should remain in the obscurity, as the cover Placebo or the popband Peaches did and others are quite surprising or even bizarre but way more interesting. Here we have some cases:

Cover by QRN (1999) doing an industrial-rock cover!

Cover by Melo-M (2007), a cello-band in the vein of Apocalyptica, helped by one of the original singers of Boney M, Maizie Williams.

Cover by Boney Nem (1997), one of my favourite metal-cover bands, though they are not doing that so often anymore.

Funny Video + Cover Song 22

Back to all the FV + CS compilation

I have hardly had seen someone more drunk than this guy, the title of the video is quite right XD

First time I have listened to the song called "Diamonds & Rust" was when I was pretty young in the middle of the 80's. We had that original casette of Judas Priest, "Sin After Sin" (1977) and I remember it wasn't one of my favourite ones at that time, I liked more "British Steel", "Screaming for Vengeance" or "Defenders of the Faith". I recall "Sin After Sin" a bit irregular, and specially remember one of the worst songs Judas had ever made under my point of view, the sad (and depressing) "Here Come the Tears". On the other hand, the second song "Diamonds and Rust" was one of my favourites (wow, somehow I'm feeling the need of taking back those albums and give another listening after so many years). I thought for lots of years that that song was from Judas Priest, and I guess many people did cause it fitted very well with the sound of the band. Besides, the original author wasn't so known here in Spain.

So, "Diamonds and Rust" was firstly recorded in 1975 by the american folk singer Joan Baez. In the song, Baez recounts an out-of-the-blue phone call from an old lover, which sends her a decade back in time, to a seedy hotel in Greenwich Village. She recalls giving him a pair of cuff links, and summarizes that memories bring "diamonds and rust" (time both turns dirty charcoal into beautiful diamonds and shiny metal into ugly rust).
Joan Baez

It is often said that the song describes Baez's relationship with Bob Dylan, ten years prior. In Baez's memoir, And a Voice to Sing With, she recounted how she told Dylan that the song was actually about her husband David Harris, thereby countering the claim that the song was about Dylan and Baez. Although Dylan is not specifically named in the song, Baez has admitted in her memoir as well as in a number of interviews that he is the inspiration for the song.

Judas Priest cover (right now listening again to "Last Rose of the Summer" and oufff I recall why I didnt like so much that album).

Blackmore's Night cover
More similar to the original one, and with an excellent performance by Candice Night

Funny Video + Cover Song 21

Back to all the FV + CS compilation

Dont know if it's "real" or not, but indeed hilarious XD

"I only wanna be with you" is a song by Mike Hawker and Ivor Raymonde. It was the first solo single released by British singer Dusty Springfield in 1963. It was a popular success, reaching #4 UK, #12 US, #6 Australia, and #21 Canada. In the US, it was one of the first pre-Beatles hits of the British Invasion of 1964.

This song was covered by many different artists from every music style:
for example The Tourists with Annie Lennox:

The 80's techno pop of Samantha Fox:

And the metal version comes from Volbeat, a band from Denmark which became quite famous since the release of their last album "Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood":

I've had quite a lot of laughs with this "how to censore a porn video"

Lots of people still believe "Walking in the air" is a composition of Tuomas Holopainen for the great Oceanborn's Nightwish album, but it is not.
The original song was made in 1982 by Howard Blake for the animation movie called "The Snowman". This was a short film based on an english child's tale that won the Oscar award in 1983 of Best Short Animated Film.
Howard Blake - Walking In The Air (Soundtrack The Snowman (1982))

From the album "Oceanborn":
Nightwish - Walking In The Air (1998)

But there is one more cover song that I want to place here cause I personally think it totally smashes the cover of Nightwish and is way far better. With the voice of Chloë Agnew..
Celtic Woman - Walking In The Air

Celtic Woman is a band formed in 2004 by 6 irish girls: the singers Chloë Agnew, Órla Fallon, Méav Ní Mhaolchatha, Lisa Kelly, Hayley Westenra and with violin Máiréad Nesbitt

Nightmares...
...and collisions...

Today's cover song comes from the fraud russian "artificial band" called t.A.T.u. I took their worldwide succesful song "All the things she said" of 2002.

Money and marketing can get everything in music business.
t.A.T.u. - All the things she said

... and this is the right way to play it:
The Berzerker - All the things she said

The Berzerker is an Australian band formed in the middle of the 90's that plays Industrial GrindCore Death. At the beginning they were famous for using "monster masks", but they left that when they released their third album... maybe because they didnt want to be confused with any Lordi's fan? probably XD

Months ago I found this video that seemed to be quite popular through internet. There were many versions later, and even one fan page was created afterwards with gadjets and publicity about the character. Right now there are HUNDREDS of versions in the web! Anyway, here you have first the original one, and then different funny mixes.

Cover song I've chosen this time is the 2007 famous song "Apologize" from the US band One Republic. The hip hop singer Timbaland remixed the song later and the result is the one that everyone knows... a really nice song under my point of view.
Timbaland feat. One Republic - Apologize

I recently discovered this band called All Ends. They are from Sweden and do a kind of metal-rock style. I was surprised when I had a look at their other video of "Walk Away".
First, guitars are totally Stromblad-In Flames particular sound.
And second, the 2 singers that that band has... beautiful singers but I really dont get the musical meaning of having 2 singers that have the same tone of voice.
It sounds for me like just marketing based in the "female singer (x2) fan effect".
All Ends - Apologize

I have later read that Jesper Stromblad helped and supported the band... hummm not surprising... and that days ago one of the singers had quit, so the band recruited the powerpop singer Jonna Sailon (...)

Funny to see the "music I like" in her facebook profile.

Muppets Korpiklaani (esta vai dedicada ó Pagan Pagan Warrior XD)

You might know Falco, he is a rock-pop-rap singer and songwriter who became famous in the 80's thanks to hits that were number one in the lists of lots of countries. We can remember him thanks to songs like "Rock Me Amadeus" (1985) or "Coming Home" (1986).
At the end of the 80's, he started having problems with drugs and family issues, and his career started to decline. He never sold as much as he did in the mid 80's.
His last released album in life was Nachtflug (1992), but he died when he had almost finished his upcoming album in 1998.
That album called "Out of the dark" was finally released when he already passed away in the same year due a car accident in Dominican Republic.
He had lots of songs in his work that talked about drugs or sex, and he had a lot of controversy thanks to that. Austria, his native country banned some of those songs like "Ganz Wien (... ist heut auf Heroin)" ("All Vienna consume heroin nowadays") or the hits “Der Komissar” y "Jeanny" (1985) which are related with a sexual crime.
One of the singles of his last album was the dance song "Mutter, Der Mann Mit Dem Koks Ist Da"

Falco - Mutter, Der Mann Mit Dem Koks Ist Da

Well, I wanted to tell this after watching the vid cause it was like I did for first time, and it's funny to see later the meaning behind the title and things we could see in the video...
That song means "Motherfucker, Oh Man, Am I Coked Up"
-'Koks' is the german word for charcoal, but also popular slang for cocaine.
Basically its the children singing to their mother 'mother the man delivering the charcoal is here' at a time of general poverty, with charcoal being the only way to heat the lousy rooms, and the original popular song then going on with the children wondering how mother would then pay the bill for the charcoal, cause they have no money, and then later in the way the mother reacts to the childrens questions insinuating the mother dealing out sex/favours to the delivery man to desperately somehow get him to still give her the coal to be able to support for the children.

His insinuation is also very heavily pushed in the video to the song, where the 'white powder' is never shown as cocaine (of course also due to legal reason, but also always tongue-in-cheek), but always with the charcoal & mother/deliveryman situation, even though everyone knows about the 'REAL' context that Falco sang about in the song, thats being cocaine.-
(thanks to smjuke)

Stahlhammer is a band that I discovered 10 years ago thanks to a friend that I had in that pc share program called Soulseek. He strongly adviced me that metal austrian band which combines elements from industrial to hardcore to symphonic...
The video of the song is a good tribute as well to the double meaning that Falco liked so much :D

Batman vs Videogame

A far l’amore comincia tu is a megahit that Raffaella Carrá made in the 70's. Raffaella Carrá is an italian singer, dancer, tv presenter and actress that was very famous in latinamerica, Spain and Italy mostly in the 70's and 80's decades. The song was recorded by herself in italian, spanish and english, and later was covered in german language by Tony Holiday re-naming the song to tanze samba mit mir. In Spanish Raffaella translated the song re-naming it as well like en el amor todo es empezar.
I have chosen the italian version because it seems like explosions are bigger and I am a rude guy, you know XD
Raffaella Carrá - A Far L'amore Comincia Tu

Tony Holiday was a german pop singer and songwriter. His cover song of Raffaella Carrá quickly became a hit in both Germany and Austria, peaking at #4 on the German music charts and reaching the Top 20 on the Austrian music charts in 1977.
Tony Holiday - Tanze Samba Mit Mir

Tankwart is a parallel project of the german thrashers Tankard. They just made 2 albums in the middle of the 90's making a thrash humour-parody metal.

The first song is the Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter soundtrack!! XDD

Ram Jam
is a 70's american rock band and creators of the famous song "Black Betty" (1977). Bill Bartlett, guitarist leader of Ram Jam took a song from the blues-folk composer Leadbelly (1885-1949) called Black Betty wich was just 1 min. long and arranged and remade it making the popular song we all know.
Ram Jam - Black Betty

Spiderbait is an Australian rock band who have had two top ten albums and another three albums reach the Australian top 40. Their song "Buy Me a Pony" was #1 on the Triple J Hottest 100 for 1996, and the group enjoyed success with their 2004 #1 Australian hit cover of "Black Betty". They started in 1992 and the last release is a greatest hits compilation in 2005 after 6 albums.
Spiderbait - Black Betty

Tom & Jerry cover Finntroll

Värttinä is Finland's most successful contemporary folk music group. Fronted by three female singers and supported by six acoustic musicans, composes most of their music and lyrics based on traditional Karelian and other Finno-ugric styles but with modern and thoroughly distinctive and orginal arrangements. They were formed in 1983!!! and passed through different line-ups in all their history.
A must know if you like folk music!
Värttinä - Käppee

I have talked about Boney Nem in one of the first posts of this section, they are a funny russian band which started like Thrash-Death and they developed into a Industrial Death Metal style. They have lots of cover songs, and I think this one of the Värttinä's Käppee totally rocks!

Back to all the FV + CS compilation

"El príncipe gitano" (the gypsy prince) is a flamenco spanish singer, I suppose more or less famous though I dont know too much about flamenco music because I dont like it at all. He did a cover song from the rock myth Elvis Presley that you can see here with his odd way to sing in english language.
Note: It's not manipulated, and it's a serious show in the national spanish TV :D
I have seen this video many years ago, but somehow I found it again few time ago and I cried laughing again XD
El príncipe gitano - In the guetto

Time ago I listened to an album of Richard Cheese, a swing singer that covers lots of songs from every style of music. I didnt know all the songs were covers so when I listened "Me so horny" I thought that band had a very funny and spicy mood when composing. Finding more, I realized that that song was a cover of a band called 2 live crew, a hip hop band formed in Miami (Florida) in the late 80's. Seems they had a lot of controversy due to the sexual content of their lyrics. One of the most famous songs they made it's this next one "Me so horny".
2 Live Crew

Richard Cheese (didnt find any good video, so, I've chosen a weird one with images from Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn.. nothing related with the song.. but.. better than seeing just a video with a pic XDD)

What'll we get for ten dollars?
Every 'ting you want
Everything?
Every'ting
Ooh! Don't do that, baby! Ahh!
Hold on this! Oh, sock it to me! Aaahh!
Ooohh!

Ahh! Me so horny!
Me love you long time!

Sittin' at home with my dick on hard
So I got the black book for a freak to call
Picked up the telephone, then dialed the 7 digits
Said, "Yo, this Marquis, baby! Are you down with it?"
I arrived at her house, knocked on the doo
rNot having no idea of what the night had in store
I'm like a dog in heat, a freak without warning
I have an appetite for sex, 'cause me so horny

Girls always ask me why I fuck so much
I say "What's wrong, baby doll, with a quick nut?"
'Cause you're the one, and you shouldn't be mad
I won't tell your mama if you don't tell your dad
I know he'll be disgusted when he sees your pussy busted
Won't your mama be so mad if she knew I got that ass?
I'm a freak in heat, a dog without warning
My appetite is sex, 'cause me so horny

You can say I'm desperate, even call me perverted
But you say I'm a dog when I leave you fucked and deserted
I'll play with your heart just like it's a game
I'll be blowing your mind while you're blowing my brains
I'm just like that man they call Georgie Puddin' Pie
I fuck all the girls and I make 'em cry
I'm like a dog in heat, a freak without warning
I have an appetite for sex, 'cause me so horny.

Ahh! Hold on this! Oh, sock it to me!

It's true, you were a virgin until you met me
I was the first to make you hot and wetty-wetty
You tell your parents that we're goin' out
Never to the movies, just straight to my house
You said it yourself, you like it like I do
Put your lips on my dick, and suck my asshole too
I'm a freak in heat, a dog without warning
My appetite is sex, 'cause me so horny

Later, I realized one of the links there was near the original song from 2 Live Crew was a video of the Staley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" (La Chaqueta Metálica), and they took the idea for the song from the following extract of the movie.
Dios! é a miña impresión ou é que o tipo sona coma se fose do alto do cadramón falando injlés cando dice "fifteen dollars for both of us?" XDDD
logo outras frases tamén sona que ese actor ten un certo acento galaico notable.. ou é imaxinación miña!!?? XDD
Me sucky sucky. Me love you too much XDDD
Un extracto divertido, con final inesperado, un dia destes teñome que ver esa peli. Porqué non botarán destas en vez de botar na TV por décima vez Agarrame eses fantasmas, Harry Potter ou calquera das trapalladas que repiten sempre??

Funny video + cover song 11

Back to all the compilation of FV+CS

For this 11th time of this part of this blog I will keep close to the borderline of the freakiest one XD
The funny vid I've chosen is an unbeliavable video that seems was running in the freakest forums in internet. I had never seen this one before last week and it's just great. It belongs to the movie City Hunter (1993) and there is a flash where Jackie Chan takes the personality of some characters of Street Fighter (yes, the videogame)!!
Amazing? Wooho Have a look!!

Dedicado esta vez a putoloco :D
Shakira - Hips don't lie
I think there is no need to put here the original video, all we are tired or probably just watch once and dont want to watch again XD
Shakira-Danzig cover song. Great those gooooooooo yeeeeehhh in the middle of the song XDD

So.. thanks to technology we can move 20 years to the future and see how Glenn Danzig is in good shape and still singing powerful those yeeeeeeeeeh XD He became a big Elvis Presley fan, by the way, and Shakira keeps on moving hips like no one, and having the same characteristic voice as before, seems years are not passing for her ;) Bizarre, but real as real life XD

For the cover song, this time I've chosen a cover song of a cover song XDD strange yeh! :D
So, the first original is the cover song of Metallica that Avril Lavigne made of the song "Fuel" in some american awards, I guess MTV or smthing like that.

And the cover song of that one is ... this XDD I think it's made by brazilian or portuguese people because I could listen a "uh que bom!" when the guy is doing the guitar solo XD

Who is the new leader???
Hilarious XD

This time 2 cover songs from the classic of Bon Jovi "Livin' On A Prayer" when they were a Rock band XDD and Jon Bon Jovi could make high tones singing XDD
So, the first cover is from an asiatic child who is really amazing. Unbeliavable cover song. He is doing at the same time the bass, vocals and guitars and solo (of course changing from some to others but I could see in other coversongs he has -check them- bass, guitar and voice melodies at the same time or maybe I was in an hallucination - also probable XDD-). You have to see Sungha Jung to believe :)
Bon Jovi - Livin' On A Prayer

Sungha Jung - Living On A Prayer

The really funny coversong of the great spanish parody-band Gigatron, but you must understand spanish and the "rock-metal" culture in the last years and 80's in Spain to understand and laugh like a child XDD

I am a lover of cover songs from the seventies and eighties, but also of cover songs from old video games. I think there are lots of video games with very cool soundtracks.
Powerglove is a US band that plays instrumental progresive metal based on video game soundtracks. I knew about them last year, and they are amazing. Not just because they are great musicians but they are making very nice rythm changes and melody combinations.
