Surprises 2010: An Infinite Dream Sequence

Band
: An Infinite Dream Sequence
Album: The Series Of Reveries Subsides (first and last album)
Genre: Technical Prog-Death Metal
Country: Sweden

It's probably the first time I see a band that releases an album and inmediately tells they split up. Strange, and even more when they have done a superb release as this. I have seen that in many webs they call them "melodic death metal", but I guess the musicians would be a bit surprised if they see this, cause what they do is a quite strong technical death metal with several influences. Recommended.

An Infinite Dream Sequence

1. Eternal Insomnolence
2. Tellus Ablaze
3. The Cold and the Wicked
4. Masquerade of the Dead
5. Finding My Path
6. Beyond the Wall of Corpses
7. Withered Sagacity
8. Carry the Cross
9. Cerebral Termination

Band: Haken
Album: Aquarius (first album)

If you have been disappointed by the poor last works of the giants of the genre such as Dream Theather or Pain of Salvation, run and search for this rookie band called Haken. Fresh, varied and great composition. From funk to Opeth, all in the middle is made with inspiration by Haken. The album Dream Theater is dreaming and is not able to do in the last decade.

Surprises 2010: Stribog

Band: Stribog
Album: U Okovima Vjecnosti (first album)
Genre: Pagan Folk Black Metal
Country: Croatia

At first, I really thought they were a russian band; there are many that play this kind of Pagan Metal with some black or doom elements with a girl singing high-pitched folky melodies. Besides, this slavic way of understanding Pagan Metal is very unique and interesting.
Again, I must say that there are many doing quite the same, and few bands are worthy remarkable, and Stribog can be one of those. For a first album, they show enough skills and compositive maturity.

1. Ancestral Skies Of Gold 06:35
2. Morana 05:21
3. Rusalka 07:58
4. Follow The Silver Path 04:36

Surprises 2010: Thulcandra

Band: Thulcandra
Album: Fallen Angel’s Dominion (first album)
Genre: Black-Death Metal
Country: Germany

Dissection was a big influence for many black-death metal bands, and probably without Dissection, Thulcandra would never exist. They take the legacy of the timeless band of Jon Nödtveidt just after their masterpiece "Storm of the light's bane". So "Fallen Angel's Dominion" could be a worth continuation for those Dissection, Thulcandra even tried to sound just like them, riffs are very similar and even some are almost ripped off from Dissection, song structures are the same, the intro, the names of the songs... even the cover is made by Kristian Wåhlin, who also worked for Dissection among others, of course, blue coloured, as "The somberlain" and "Storm..".
And the cover song... of course.. you guessed well.
For all the fans of the mentioned band, it's worth checking, it's an honorable tribute to one of the greatest black metal bands of all times.

1. In The Realm Of Thousand Deaths 01:30
2. Night Eternal 07:29
3. Fallen Angel's Dominion 04:57
4. Frozen Kingdom 06:20
5. Everlasting Fire 05:05
6. Spirit Of The Night 06:45
7. Legions Of Darkness 05:15
8. In Silence We Eternally Sleep 01:11
9. The Somberlain (Dissection cover) 07:07

Surprises 2010: Aorlhac

Band: Aorlhac
Album: La cité des vents (third album)
Genre: Black Metal
Country: France

French black metal is arising with strength in the last years. Sometimes, by unknown reasons, a place, a time and a genre are somehow interrelated and it's a cradle for many good bands that might become great ones in their style. This is happening with atmosferic-melodic black metal right now in France. There are many good bands that are releasing their first albums with an indisputable quality.
Aorlhac launched their third work since 2008 this year, a worth listening for all the black metal fans.

1. A la croisée des vents II 01:06
2. Le bûcher des Cathares 06:21
3. Plérion 04:38
4. Le miroir des péchés 06:17
5. Sant Flor, la cité des vents 06:10

Surprises 2010: Crystalic

Band: Crystalic
Album: Persistence (second album)
Genre: Melodic Death
Country: Finland

Last years were too (much) productive in the melodic death genre, and choosing something good or original between the thousands of releases could be a hard task. The style is a bit saturated since time ago and many times if you listen often Metal and you see "melodeath", this might be even a bad signal; there are too many and too "the same" doing that.
Crystalic are not a very original band, but I think this album is standing over the thousands of melodeath releases.

1. Sub-Creatures 05:02
2. Throne of Sin 05:03
3. Wall of Sanity 04:20
4. Vanishing Act 03:03
5. Voiceless Army 04:50
6. Eulogy 02:26
7. Blastbeat of My Heart 06:08
8. New Time 04:53
9. Lord of the Mourn 04:57
10. Too Dark to See 08:53

Surprises 2010: Jaldaboath

Band
: Jaldaboath
Album: The Rise of the Heraldic Beasts (first album)
Genre: Medieval-Pagan Metal
Country: U.K.

The head of The Meads of Asphodel and the extincted band Ewigkeit comes with a new weird project that mixes the melodic pagan-folk-medieval metal with funny lyrics, keyboards and way of playing. Many song melodies are inspired by other melodies like "Hark the herald" (a medieval tune) or "Jaldaboath" (a TV production from the 70's-80's).
It might recall you to a Heavy Metal version of Monty Python, and could be called something like Happy-Pagan Metal. In these days it is really difficult to find a band that creates their own style, a worth listening for all the unabashedly pagan-folk metal fans.

1. Hark The Herald 03:31
2. Calling On All Heraldic Beasts 04:35
3. Bash The Bishop 04:24
4. Seek The Grail 04:21
5. Axe Wielding Nuns 04:09
6. Jaldaboath 04:11
7. Bring Me The Head Of Metatron 04:31
8. Jacque De Molay 03:58
9. March to Calvary (Instrumental) 02:36
10. Da Vinci's Code (Bonus Track) 04:07

Surprises 2010: Morowe

Band
: Morowe
Album: Piekło.Labirynty.Diabły (first album)
Genre: Post-Black Metal

Great first album of this polish band, having the essence of black metal in the background, twisted melodies and atmospheres, and an evil ambient that will bring the darker and colder feelings you might have back to your inner self. Probably the best album of the year.
